Locally known in Marathi as Shevanti, Chrysanthemums are popular the world over and fondly called Pot Mum or Florist's Mum. It is a classic houseplant often brought as a present or during festivities.
In the wonderfully conducive Indian climate, Chrysanthemums foliage lasts year long and produces annual blooms that last 8-12 weeks.
Care Guide
Light
In all cases bright light is required. Keep on a sunny window-sill or a semi-shady spot in the balcony for the best growth.
Watering
The Pot Mum has an incredible transpiration rate and this is one of the reasons it is so effective at cleaning the air. Because of this you will need to water quite often, perhaps up to twice a week. Keep the soil damp at all times.
How to Care for the Alocasia Recap:
-
Bright Light or Full Sun: Good bright light is a must if you want to keep the flowers vibrant and the plant producing new buds. Some direct sunlight will be accepted too.
-
Moderate Watering: Water once or twice a week. Once 10 days in winter or if growing in lower light/ cooler conditions.
-
Cool or Medium Temperature: The flowers last longer in cooler rooms, so once in full bloom, aim for temperatures 18°C and below. The plant will still be fine if you pick a warmer location, but the flowers won't last for quite as long.
-
Feeding: If you can, fertilise every months or so during Spring and Summer.
- Once the flowers have faded remove or deadhead them, otherwise they could go mouldy.
