Variegated Screw Pine is as similar in looks to the Spider Plant as it is to care for. This is an easy to grow houseplant. In fact it's potentially one of the easiest and most rewarding indoor plants you can grow in your home, given that it grows to a large size, can be planted outdoors or indoors and looks great!

One of the most interesting points of the Screw Pine is its ability to rapidly propagate itself. A "baby", "pup" or "plantlet" from the mother plant will often root with a very high success rate. There is never long to wait until the pup is sending up slender shoots of its own, that produce small white flowers which develop into more airborne plantlets.

This plant is medium-large in size.

Care Guide

Light

All the variegated Screw Pines need a bright spot in order to keep their stripes. A darker location will cause the plant to lose its variegation, and growth will be much slower. A few hours of direct sunlight is best, but the plant is happy to accept bright, indirect sunlight as well.

Watering

Watering your plant well in the growing months (Spring through to Autumn) and putting it in a bright spot, will yield a fast rate of growth. Water only sparingly in Winter as growth slows down no matter what you do at this time of year and if too much water is sloshing around the roots, it can cause the plant to rot.

How to Care for the Screw Pine Recap:

  1. Bright Light Levels: An adaptable houseplant that will grow well in both direct  or diffused bright light.

  2. Moderate Watering: Water at least twice a week in Summer. Less often in Winter.

  3. Warm Temperature: Pick rooms in your home to grow your plant in that are warm.

  4. Feeding: Provide feed to the soil twice every month. No need to feed during periods of no growth, for example during Winter.

  • Avoid long periods of very harsh direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.
