Widely popular during Christmas season as festive plants, Poinsettia is a beautiful and unique plant that comes in red and pink variants. Poinsettias make for easy care and beautiful seasonal houseplants.

The large colourful bracts of the Poinsettia are often mistaken for flower petals, but they are in fact leaves. The flowers are actually the tiny yellow berry-like structures at the centre of each leaf bract, which are called cyathia.

How do you pronounce Poinsettia correctly? Say: Poyn-seh-tee-uh

With their star-shaped leaf bracts, Poinsettia has popularly become known as Christmas Stars. The vivid pink and dark green leaves will brighten up any corner of your home.

Care Guide

Light

This plant enjoys an indoor spot with diffused light. Keep away from direct sunlight  because it can easily scorch the leaves. Dark areas are temporarily okay but no longer than a few days.

Watering

One of the top ways to kill a Poinsettia is by overwatering it. It doesn't need as much water as you think and in Winter the majority of houseplants need very little anyway. Of course it does need some to survive, so wait until the top of the soil dries out before thoroughly watering again, about 1-2 times a week at most.

How to Care for the Poinsettia Recap:

  1. Medium or Bright Light: Pretty much anything will do except very low light and intense direct sunlight.

  2. Low Watering: Once a week at most in Winter. You will need to provide slightly more water during the Summer.

  3. Warm Temperatures: Aim for temperatures 18°C and above.

  4. Feeding: Feertilize once or twice in Spring and again in Summer.

  • Avoid trying to grow it in areas with too much wind or draft.
  • Take care not to overwater.
